From childhood I suffered with severe eczema and very dry, highly sensitive skin. Most commercial products either dried my skin further or aggravated my eczema, so I stuck with the petroleum-based moisturisers and steroid creams prescribed by my doctors. It wasn’t ideal but the combination kept my eczema at bay with prolonged used (I later learned it was this improper use of steroids that damaged my skin). After several years of this regime, I grew concerned with the effects the ingredients were having on my skin and wanted an alternative.
I discovered that natural oils such as Olive and Wheatgerm made my skin softer, smoother, and most importantly did not cause the usual irritations that I encountered daily. Using natural oils on my skin made a huge difference, and in addition to dietary cautions and avoidance of known irritants, my eczema ‘flare ups’ surfaced less and less.
After having children, natural skin care became an essential part of daily life. 2 of my 3 sons inherited my eczema, allergies and also developed Anaphylaxis (life-threatening allergic reactions). Both boys were fortunate enough to have fantastic dermatology and allergy care in a specialised clinic, but were prescribed similar steroid ointments and chemically laden moisturisers as I had been given, the latter of which seemed to aggravate their skin further.
When a popular prescribed moisturiser burned my then 4-month old’s skin, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I began creating my own natural oil mixes to nourish and heal my son’s skin. I researched ingredients and started simply, using Shea Butter, Olive Oil and Coconut Oil, then later began experimenting with additional and better quality oils, learning different techniques to blend them.
Improvements in moisture and softness started to show on our skin, and although the eczema flare ups still occurred, the general condition of my family’s skin was better than ever. The doctors still encouraged me to apply the steroids to my children when needed, but were very impressed with the results of my natural moisturisers and praised my dedication to finding natural alternatives.
Friends and family also started noticing our skin improvements and requested samples of my concoctions for their own use. They were soon demanding more, and after regular suggestions that I should create my own range, I decided to give it a go.
It has taken a long time, and many sacrifices to put it all together, but with the love and support of everyone around me, I have made it happen. Imanmade Natural Skin Care is up and running!
Wishing you peace, love and good skin!
